This guide explains what a solid AMC should cover, what to watch out for in the fine print, and the questions worth asking any provider before you sign.

What an IT AMC actually is

An IT AMC is a fixed-term support agreement between your business and an IT provider. In exchange for a flat annual fee, the provider takes responsibility for keeping your infrastructure running: responding to breakdowns, handling preventive maintenance, and being the first call when something goes wrong.

Done properly, it replaces the unpredictable cost of emergency callouts with a predictable line item in your budget. Done poorly, it's a contract that sounds comprehensive until you need it.

What should be included

A well-structured IT AMC for a Dubai business should cover:

Hardware support — fault diagnosis, repair coordination, and replacement of failed components for servers, switches, firewalls, access points, and end-user devices on site.

On-site and remote response — clear SLAs for both. Remote support for software issues is fast and practical; on-site attendance matters for hardware faults and anything that can't be resolved over a remote session. A 30-minute first-response SLA is a reasonable standard to hold a provider to.

Preventive maintenance visits — scheduled checks (quarterly at minimum) to review server health, patch levels, firewall rules, UPS battery condition, and cabling. These visits catch problems before they cause downtime, not after.

Network and security monitoring — passive monitoring of your firewall and network gear so that unusual traffic or a failing device surfaces before it becomes an outage.

Software and licensing guidance — keeping track of expiring licences (antivirus, Microsoft 365, firewall subscriptions) and flagging renewals before they lapse.

Documentation — a maintained network diagram and asset register. Sounds administrative, but it's what cuts an hour off every troubleshooting call when something breaks at 8 a.m.

What to watch out for

Exclusions buried in the scope. Some AMC contracts cover "labour only" and charge separately for parts, travel beyond a radius, or any work outside business hours. Read the scope carefully and ask for a plain-English exclusions list.

Response time vs resolution time. A contract may guarantee a one-hour response but say nothing about resolution. Ask how priority levels are defined and what the expected fix time is for a server that is down.

Headcount and coverage. A provider with a single engineer has a coverage problem the moment that engineer is on another site or on leave. Ask how many engineers are on the team and how cover is handled.

Auto-renewal clauses. Standard in the industry, but worth knowing so you're not locked in for another year 30 days before you intended to switch.

How to evaluate a provider

Ask for a site assessment first. Any competent provider will want to see your infrastructure before quoting — server room, network cabinet, number of endpoints, installed software. A quote issued without this is a guess.

Check their response geography. Dubai traffic is real. A provider based in Deira supporting a client in JBR needs either engineers distributed across the city or a margin of extra time built into the SLA. Ask where their engineers work from.

Look for references from similar-sized businesses. An IT firm that primarily serves enterprise clients operates differently from one that supports 10- to 100-person offices. The processes, tools, and response norms are different. Find out who makes up the bulk of their client base.

Clarify what happens to your data and documentation if you leave. You should be entitled to your own network documentation, configuration backups, and asset records at any point.

What it costs in Dubai

Flat AMC pricing in Dubai typically ranges from AED 800–1,500 per user per year for a well-scoped contract covering helpdesk support, preventive maintenance, and remote monitoring. Contracts covering server infrastructure, firewall management, and on-site response generally sit at the higher end of that range or are priced separately per device.

Avoid contracts priced so low that there's no margin for the provider to attend site more than once or twice a year — the economics don't work and the service will reflect that.
