Why Server Room Design Matters More in Dubai
Dubai ambient temperature exceeds 40 degrees Celsius in summer. Server hardware begins degrading above 27 degrees. Without proper cooling, you risk hardware failures, data loss, and costly emergency replacements.
1. Cooling (Critical in Dubai)
Target: 18 to 24 degrees Celsius. 40 to 60% relative humidity.
Regular split AC units are not suitable. Use a precision air conditioning unit (PAC): continuous operation, tight temperature control, humidity management.
Brands: Stulz, Liebert (Vertiv), Schneider Electric.
Sizing: 1 kW of cooling per 1 kW of IT load minimum. Add 20% overhead.
Hot aisle / cold aisle containment: Organise racks so all equipment blows hot air in the same direction. Cuts cooling energy by 20 to 30%.
2. Power
UPS (Non-negotiable): Online double-conversion UPS. Minimum 15 to 30 minutes runtime at full load. Brands: APC, Eaton, Vertiv.
Dedicated electrical circuit: Server room on its own circuit breaker. Never share with HVAC or heavy electrical equipment.
Generator: Connect to building generator for business-critical environments.
3. Physical Security
- Dedicated lockable door (biometric or card access preferred)
- Only authorised IT staff have access
- CCTV inside server room
- Access log maintained
4. Fire Suppression
Regular fire sprinklers will destroy your servers. Server rooms require FM-200 or Novec 1230 gas suppression system. Plus VESDA early warning smoke detection. Must be inspected annually per Dubai Civil Defence requirements.
5. Monitoring
Temperature sensor (alert at 28 degrees), humidity sensor, water/leak detection, power failure alert, door open alert. Tools: APC NetBotz, Vertiv Geist, or AKCP sensors.
