How to Set Up a Secure Office Network in Dubai: The SMB Quick-Start Guide

What a Dubai SMB Actually Needs (And What to Skip)

Most small businesses in Dubai are oversold complex enterprise networking. Here is what a 5 to 30-person office actually needs — no wasted budget.

The Minimum Viable Secure Network

Layer 1: Firewall

A business-grade firewall is non-negotiable. Consumer routers have no intrusion prevention, application control, or proper logging.

Recommendation for up to 30 users: Fortinet FortiGate 40F (AED 3,000 to 5,000). Includes IPS, web filtering, VPN, and application control. One device handles it all.

Layer 2: Switches

Managed PoE switches power your access points and phones over the same Cat6 cable. Recommended: TP-Link TL-SG2428P or UniFi USW-24-PoE for a 20-30 user office.

Layer 3: WiFi

One enterprise access point per 15 to 20 users, ceiling-mounted. UniFi U6 Pro or Ruckus R350 for SMBs. Do not use home WiFi routers.

Layer 4: VLANs (At Minimum)

  • VLAN 10: Staff devices and computers
  • VLAN 30: Guest WiFi (internet only)
  • VLAN 40: CCTV cameras and NVR

Four VLANs take about 2 hours to configure and prevent a huge number of security problems.

This covers 20 users securely with enterprise-grade WiFi, a proper firewall, and guest isolation.

The Three Mistakes SMBs Make

1. Buying a consumer router (TP-Link or Linksys home router) for an office

2. Flat network with no VLANs — one infected device reaches everything

3. No firewall logging — you never know when something is wrong

When to Upgrade Your Network

  • User count grows beyond 30: add second AP and potentially upgrade switch
  • Adding CCTV or access control: segment onto dedicated VLANs
  • Moving to a new office: plan cabling before walls close
