Data Backup and Disaster Recovery for Dubai Businesses: The No-Nonsense Guide

SAS IT Team24 April 20268 min read

The Backup Truth Most IT Companies Will Not Tell You

Having a backup is not the same as having a working backup. We have recovered data for dozens of Dubai businesses whose backups turned out to be corrupt, incomplete, or pointing to a drive that died alongside the original.

The 3-2-1 Backup Rule

  • 3 copies of your data
  • 2 different storage media (local disk + NAS)
  • 1 copy offsite (cloud or physical offsite)

If ransomware encrypts your production server and your local backup, the offsite copy saves you.

RTO and RPO

RTO (Recovery Time Objective): How quickly do you need to be back online after a disaster?

  • 4-hour RTO: acceptable for most businesses
  • 1-hour RTO: requires hot standby systems

RPO (Recovery Point Objective): How much data can you afford to lose?

  • 24-hour RPO: daily backup is sufficient
  • 4-hour RPO: backup every 4 hours

Backup Solutions by Business Size

Small (up to 20 users): Synology NAS + Synology C2 or Azure Backup. Setup AED 3,000 to 6,000 + AED 200 to 400 per month cloud.

Mid-market (20 to 100 users): Veeam Backup + Replication + Veeam Cloud Connect. Setup AED 8,000 to 20,000 + AED 500 to 1,500 per month.

The Most Important Step: Test Your Restore

Schedule a restore test every quarter. Restore random files to a test location and verify they open. If you have never tested your restore, you do not have a backup — you have a backup attempt.
