CCTV vs IP Camera: Understanding the Terminology and What Your Dubai Office Needs

SAS IT Team27 May 20266 min read

The Terminology Shift

CCTV (Closed-Circuit Television): Originally analog coaxial cameras with dedicated recording boxes. Mostly obsolete.

IP Camera: Digital cameras that run on your network, transmit via Ethernet or WiFi, and record to an NVR (Network Video Recorder) or cloud.

For modern deployments, "CCTV" and "IP camera" are often used interchangeably, but IP camera is more technically accurate.

Modern Systems Are Hybrid

Most installations today use:

  • IP cameras (2MP to 4K) as capture devices
  • NVR (digital recorder) as central storage
  • Cloud backup for disaster recovery
  • Mobile apps for remote viewing

What Dubai Offices Should Buy

IP camera-based systems exclusively. Analog technology is obsolete and impractical for modern businesses.

Specific recommendation: Hikvision or Dahua IP camera systems with 4MP cameras for general areas and 4K for high-detail zones (entrances, cashiers).
